Description:

RCD3063 Magic Mirror Tachometer is a kindof synchronized tachometer, it is an instrument applied human eyes’ persistence characteristic combined nowadays high technology-electronic shutter to realize static object photograph, the appearance and design related to the product has been patented and copy right protected.

The synchronized measurement method won’tbe limited by the distance between the tachometer and the measured target, itcan measure RPM very precisely no matter the distance is more than 10 meters or tens ofmeters, it can also measure RPM of the rotating tiny target so small as 5mm in diameter. That is to say, it canmeasure any rotating target that displays on the viewing shutter.


USAGE

The red button is not only a functionalbutton but also a button for power, press down the red button under the stateof shut off, the tachometer is powered, you can see the RPM data saved lasttime, press the red button, and five sets of latest RPM test data can be checked. As soon as it is switched, P+ is displayed, and then the referenced RPM sets, for example: the first set is displayed P01, the fifth set is displayed P05, so it is easy for RPM comparison between two or more than two targetobjects.

 

Double pressed the red button, the high bright flash light turns on, the numbers and characters on the screen is alsoflash displayed, the high bright flash light turns off when the red button is double pressed again.

Press the red button for over 2 seconds, it enters aperture setting, “+” indicates aperture increase, “-”indicates aperture decrease, there are 10 levels of aperture from F1 to F10 for choice, the larger the number, the more light can come through, customers can adjust the aperture and get the best measurement result according to the natural light of environment and the target speed. 

Button“+”increases the setting RPM value, you can increase the setting RPM value quickly by long time pressing button “+”; Button“-” decreases the setting RPM value,you can decrease the setting RPM value quickly by long time pressing the button “-”, the set up number is displayed on the LCD screen at the same time.

As soon as the battery icon appears on the top right corner of the LCD screen, it indicates the battery needs to be changed, One CR2032 is applied; under dim environments, High flash performance can be achieved if LIR2030 battery applied.

The system will be shut off automaticallyafter 30 seconds of no operation.

Measurement

Hold the device, observe the target through viewing shutter(for example: main rotor of helicopter),adjust and set up RPM through button“+”and“-”, when the set up RPM is less than the real RPM of the target, you can see the main rotor rotating in the same direction on the viewing shutter, the closer the RPM toreal RPM, the slower the main rotor rotates, as soon as the set up RPM number equals the real RPM, the main rotor on the viewing shutter is motionless and static, and the read on the LCD screen is the present RPM of the main rotor.

Q: Why the Magic Mirror is the best for measure RPM of the main rotor on helicopter?
A: Firstly, reliable and safe is the for most reason, compared with the traditional tachometer, it can measure the rotating speed at long distance, it will be dangerous for measuring RPM by going near a rotating rotor such a flying helicopter with a traditional tachometer, by using Magic Mirror tachometer, customer can watch the helicopter through viewing shutter at far and safe distance; Secondly, high accuracy RPM test data can be helpful for selection a motor with right KV, right pinion gear ratio, as well as provides important information for battery pack.

Q: What’s the difference between Magic Mirror Tachometer and traditional tachometer?
A: Different principles, the laser tachometer or optical and electric tachometer can only get the accuracy RPM at very close distance by aiming the target carefully, it is impossible for them to get a RPM data from a long distance target. Magic Mirror tachometer can measure any rotating long distance target, if you can see it through the observation window.

Q: How about the accuracy of Magic Mirror tachometer?
A: The accuracy of Magic Mirror tachometer is +/- 1 RPM, it applied quartz oscillator with high precision as the clock reference, it is impossible for a traditional tachometer.  

Q: What about the difference between Magic Mirror Tachometer and traditional optical tachometer with mechanic shutter?
A: First of all, the principles of the two is same, both of them are tachometer of  synchronization, Magic Mirror tachometer applied an electronic shutter of high precision and fast response, it can be put into use as soon as the power is on, changeover between RPM set up and the switch frequency of shutter is done at the same time, but the Mechanical shutter tachometer is driven by a motor, it will take 1~3 seconds for stabilizing the speed of shutter after the RPM set up, Due to the limit of the speed control circuit, the accuracy can only reach up to 10RPM.
Adjustable aperture on Magic Mirror tachometer can make better result at the range of 800-4200RPM, however, the aperture on a traditional tachometer with mechanic shutter is not changeable, so its measurement range is 1200-3600RPM.
Magic Mirror Tachometer can measure 5 sets of RPM data simultaneously by fast changeover through functional button, yet a traditional mechanic tachometer is limited for its slow response because it is driven by a motor, it can only measure one set of RPM data.
Magic Mirror tachometer applied electronic shutter which is reliable and power saving and no need maintenance because it gets no mechanical structure inside, yet the mechanic traditional tachometer normally use a 9V battery, and require calibrated annual, otherwise, RPM accuracy is a problem.

Q: Can Magic Mirror Tachometer measure a rotating target of more than 4200RPM?
A: Yes, it can, it needs experience of estimation of RPM range, for example, when you measure RPM of a 2 blade prop, adjust the RPM of Magic Mirror till you see a static 4-blade prop from the viewing shutter, the measured RPM is 1/2 of the real RPM exactly, that is to say, if the displayed RPM on Magic Mirror is 3000RPM, the real rotating RPM is 6000RPM exactly.

Q: How small item is measurable for Magic Mirror Tachometer?
A: It can measure RPM of small item as tiny as 5mm in diameter, the only thing you need to do is to marked it with a marker pen, adjust the set up RPM till you see that the mark on the target is static on the viewing shutter, traditional tachometer can’t measure RPM of so tiny.

Q: How to set up aperture while it is on operation?
A: Normally, aperture set up F5 suitable for most applications, when the environment is dim, you can set up larger number of aperture setting to get a brighter viewing shutter; for a high RPM target, you can set up smaller number of aperture setting to get higher resolution and turn on the flash light or any other light source to get a better measurement result.

ATTENTION:
Never measure RPM while flying the RC model, the RPM measurement should be done by an assistant or it could be dangerous.

1、In real measuring process, the picture in the viewing window appears to be dark and indistinct, it can be the problem of too much aperture, it will be brighter and distinct as soon as the aperture is adjusted to F4 or F5.
2、The bright the environment is, the smaller the aperture is. The recommended aperture under the noon sunshine is F1.

Basic principal of operation:

The traditional tachometer triggers counter through pulse signal and gets RPM by MT counting method, but it is very difficult to measure RPM in the air for such items as helicopter, as it will be very dangerous for measuring RPM by going near a rotating rotor with a traditional tachometer, because a traditional tachometer can only be workable within a very short distance, but Magic Mirror tachometer found a good solution for this.

For example, normally, human’s eyes can’t figure out how fast it is for a main rotor of a helicopter when it rotates on 1500RPM, by using RCD3063, when the set up parameter is less than the real RPM, we can observe through the viewing shutter that the main rotor is rotating slowly in the same direction as that of real main rotor, on the contrary, when the set up parameter is more than the real RPM, we can see through the viewing shutter that the main rotor is rotating slowly in the different direction with that of the real main rotor, the set up parameter is closer to the real rotating RPM, the main rotor you see on the viewing shutter is slower, when the set up parameter equals that of the real RPM, the main rotor you see through the viewing shutter is almost motionless.

 

Why should we use the Magic Mirror tachometer to measure RMP of helicopter?

1, It is safe and reliable, it can measure the rotating speed in even a very far distance.

2, It is high accuracy, +- 1RPM, it is such a high accuracy that the traditional tachometer can’t achieved.

 

Why we don’t need to use the laser tachometer?

The laser tachometer can only get an accurate figure at very short distance from the target, it is very hard to measure a hovering helicopter by a laser tachometer.

 

User Ratings: 

An optical tach is used on heli's, and you look through the window in the tach and make adjustments until your rotor disk appears stationary.

How would you be checking your head speed with the Heli hovering inverted with the non optical Tach.

Why an optical tach? Safety is the reason as well as more capability.

With the optical tach you can observe the model in all modes of flight from a safe distance.

 

You do not operate the optical tach and heli by your self this is a two person task.

I think the laser tach is for airplane props, where you can go full throttle and hold the plank (or plane) stationary while you tach the propeller. The optical tach allows you to remain a safe distance from your heli, since we need to be in a hover to get an accurate headspeed reading. You can also see the rotor disk bog with the optical tach. I dunno how useful that would be to see the bogging, but it looks cool!

I have found the headspeed calculators are very accurate as long as you enter all the proper numbers, as far as motor efficiency and that kind of thing.

It may be clearer when you understand what the optical tach does. You need to adjust it's RPM until the rotor blades appear stopped. At that time, the shutter and your rotor are turning the same speed. Now you can read the RPM of the shutter on the display. The heli can be VERY far away and it works fine. Of course you need a second person to operate it.
